Forgiveness has nothing to do with absolving a criminal of his crime. It has everything to do with relieving oneself of the burden of being a victim--letting go of the pain and transforming oneself from victim to survivor.

About This Quote

Forgiveness has nothing to do with absolving a criminal of his crime. It has everything to do with relieving oneself of the burden of being a victim--letting go of the pain and transforming oneself from victim to survivor. This is a wonderful concept and one I struggle with. I struggle with forgiving people because I don’t like the idea of moving on and forgiving someone who has hurt me, and yet I find myself having to forgive people for things they have done to me. I wish that I could simply let go and move on, but it is not that easy.

The fact that something happened to me makes me look at all the little ways in which someone tried to control me and it makes me angry. I know that forgiving is not about removing responsibility from the other person, but it is about accepting responsibility for my actions and taking action so that it does not happen again.
